"By the Book" Episode Guide

Mozzie is on his way to a diner where he has been flirting with a waitress named Gina over breakfast and mystery novels. But their rendezvous is interrupted by two mysterious men who insist Gina leave with them. But Gina manages to clue Mozzie in by mentioning a novel with a plot that centers on a girl who gets into deep in is kidnapped. Concerned Mozzie shows up at FBI headquarters and begs Neal for help. Neal agrees to look into it. Neal and Mozzie find Gina's apartment trashed and a clue to check out Sal's cigar bar.

Meanwhile, Peter has gotten wind of Neal and Mozzie's investigation. He does a little digging and discovers her boyfriend is connected to Christofer Navarro, a dangerous Columbian. Peter barely manages to intervene before Neal gets hurt. Furious, Peter forces Mozzie to come back to the Bureau if he wants to find Gina. Using her credit card information, a tracker to a local park where Navarro tried to arrange a meeting between her and her boyfriend Tommy and Gina warned Tommy away. They find Tommy's cell phone, which he ditched, and discover a message from Navarro saying he wants his money or he'll kill Gina. Navarro arranges a meeting the following day.

Neal manages to figure out what named Tommy is using and Peter tracks him down. But when it comes time to meet Navarro Tommy chickens out and Mozzie steps up. Mozzie plans to use a con that he and Neal devised years earlier called the perfect exchange. It involves arranging the meeting for us at a secure library which insurers neither side can bring guns. Neal and Peter wait outside the library hoping one of Navarro's hit men will show up to plant a gun. Sure enough he does but Peter realizes once the gun is planted Mozzie will be in danger so they force the hit men to reveal Gina's location. Peter arrives in the nick of time to save Mozzie's life, but his romance with Gina is over and she reveals she has decided to move to California. Interesting Facts

The music playing when Mozzie gets off of the elevator at the FBI is "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Grieg.

In 2003, Willie Garson (Mozzie) and Diane Farr (Gina De Stefano) starred together in a pilot called Harry's Girl, but the project was not picked up

Sharif Atkins (Agent Jones) played a character with the same last name as the kidnapper (Navarro) on another USA show titled The 4400.

The Bad Guy

Cristofer Navarro is a Columbian who moved from drugs to weapons and racketeering. He kidnapped Gina DeStefano after her boyfriend Tommy Barnes walked away with $100,000 of his cash. Navarro's headquarters was Sal's Cigar Bar.

"If you were the Duke of Windsor..."

The Duke of Windsor was a title created in 1937 for Prince Edward, after he abdicated from the throne. The ascot, or day cravat, was originally worn by the Duke of Windsor to horse races in England known as the Ascot races, hence the name.

Truman Capote

"Why are you doing in a federal building dressed like Truman Capote?"

Truman Capote is an American author, best known for writing Breakfast with Tiffany. Capote often dressed in black, with a hat and scarf.

"I'll bet you a first edition Faulkner..."

William Faulkner is a Nobel Prize-winning American novelist and short story writer. A first edition Faulkner is worth between $200 to $500 unsigned. Signed, the books are worth several thousand dollars.

"Patty Hearst?"

Patty Hurst is an American newspaper heiress and socialite who was kidnapped in 1974. The group that kidnapped her initially held her for ransom then used psychological terrorism techniques to convince her to join their organization, which she did. She is one of the most well-known cases of Stockholm syndrome, a term used to describe a paradoxical psychological phenomenon wherein hostages express.

"Come on, Rain Man"

Rain Man is a 1998 movie about a savant. Neal calls Mozzie this quite frequently.

Gina and Tommy

In the episode, Gina is a diner waitress with a boyfriend named Tommy. In the song "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi tells about Gina "working in a diner all day" who dreams of "running away" and is dating Tommy who is "down on his luck."

"It's like licking the Eiffel Tower."

In the episode, this comment is made after a tourist licks a lion statue. This may be a New York thing but I couldn't find any specific reference to it. I do know there is a Facebook group called "I've licked the Eiffel Tower" and a blog titled "Lick my Monument."

Have you seen Scarface?

Scarface is a 1983 movie about a determined Cuban immigrant who takes over a drug empire .

John Travolta

"Whatever, Travolta."

Neal calls Jones this after they get Tommy's new name from the ID maker. It's a reference to the way Jones has his shirt, which resembles the way John Travolta dressed in the movie Staying Alive.


Jack Kerouac is a writer and the father of the Beat movement. The quote Mozzie says, "...it's goodbye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies." is from On the Road. The novel was based on the spontaneous road trips he and his friends took.
